内容简介:Can the collective political decision-making of female officials, who inherently possess a sustainability perspective, contribute to the mitigation of air pollution? Using manually collected data from the Standing Committee of the Municipal Party Committee (SCMPC) of 288 Chinese prefecture-level cities, this paper investigates the impact of female members on their respective cities’ air quality from two distinct angles: (1) the presence of spontaneous female members in the SCMPC; (2) the proportion of female members in the SCMPC. The results indicate that the presence of spontaneous female members and a higher ratio of females in the SCMPC are associated with significantly lower PM2.5 and significantly better air quality in their respective cities. This effect is more pronounced in cities where the SCMPC has a lower average age, faces with higher environmental pressure, and has a weaker legal infrastructure. Additionally, this paper explores the underlying mechanism of this impact and reveals that the higher the ratio of female officials in the SCMPC, the higher the environmental governance investment of fiscal expenditure, and the higher the pollutant discharge fees imposed. This paper conducts a pioneering investigation of the influence of the SCMPC's composition on regional environmental pollution, and also provides new empirical evidence for the distinctive role of female cadres in air quality.
